This is one of my favorite Jackson pictures of all time.

And this is a story of how I got into photography.  You may just want to pass up this post because it may not interest you at all.  And that’s fine.  This may not be for you.

This picture was taken with my first decent camera ever.  It was taken about 2 1/2 years ago.  Before this camera, I was never the one to take pictures….ever.  Phillip did all of the picture taking.  I didn’t even want to mess with it.  The shutter was too slow, the controls seemed too complicated, and my pictures always looked like….well, poo.  A friend of ours convinced Phillip that we needed a good camera.  I thought it was a stupid waste of money.  Phillip sold one of his amps at the time to buy our Panasonic FZ5.  It was a really good little point and shoot.

I took over the camera and Phillip hardly ever got his hands on it.  Jackson was photographed almost daily with that little camera.  I thought it was complicated and basically refused to learn how any of the controls worked. Even so, I managed to take pretty good pictures outdoors.  I began to realize that I kind of had a knack for photography….at least photographing Jackson.  After a year or so we upgraded to the Panasonic FZ50, an even better point and shoot.  I took lots of pictures for friends and family basically for free.

Then about a year ago, I got my first DSLR ever, a used Canon 10D.  I had to force myself to get over my lack of mechanical inclinations.  I read lots of book, got lots of help from other photographer friends, and basically took lots of not so great pictures until I began to get better and better.  Over time my good pictures started to outweigh the bad.  After a few months, I upgraded to the Canon 30D and that’s the camera that I’m using now.  I’m planning on upgrading again in a month or so if my preschool shoots go well.  I still have many things to learn about photography.  I will always be learning.  There are still tricks and tools of the trade that I am pretty clueless about.

I hope I never think I know it all.  I hope I always find people along the way who are ahead of me on the road who are willing to drag me along.  I also hope I am able to help out some others who might be a few steps behind me.

So, that’s my photography journey so far.  I know it will continue as long as I have working eyes and hands. And this is one of the first pictures I ever took of my son that turned out worth a darn.
